This is kinda confusing with the intentions of the characters so for anyone confused, here’s my take on it. Since Winter was poor and abused at such a young age, he started thinking that money was the only way to be respected and powerful. When he got married, he was actually quite happily surprised by his wife thinking she was elegant and non-biased against him. Wanting to protect her and keep her happy he thought that giving her the lifestyle she had before (dresses, jewelry, riches) was enough and he worked hard so she could have that. Eventually he got bitter because he thought she was ungrateful for all the things and money he gave because she always wore bland clothes and seemed unhappy no matter how hard he worked to make money for her. Since he also struggled with anger issues and showing empathy, he had no idea why she acted sad and hurt all the time. Eventually after she tried killing herself and they switched bodies, is when he finally started understanding why she was unhappy by being in her body while being sick and ignored/ridiculed by everyone. After understanding he was able to feel a little more empathy for his wife but not enough to not make the same mistakes over again by making her feel unloved and alone. Only after he realized everything about his family and how his wife could only switch bodies from trying to die, did he finally understand that his “protecting her by making money” was the worst thing he could have done and felt so bad and useless to the point where he thinks the only way for her to feel happy again is for him to die.
I forgot about the baby thing until mid-way through but that’s just a whole other crazy trauma thing that just made everything so much worse. Hopefully this helps some confused peeps 👍
