Wait What
Yes. It’s a “Memorial Day” for the servants and soldiers who died during the winter the Duke was missing and branded a traitor. Some of the employees literally starved to death (which is actually somewhat historically accurate–as late as the 1800’s in the US, servants got paid mostly in basic necessities, to the point that whether a skilled tradesman was married and the size of his family was a point of consideration when seeking employment, even though wives and children didn’t generally get a separate ‘salary’ no matter how much labor they contributed to the estate. The number of mouths on an estate was a major factor in how much food had to be produced or purchased every year. No one with legal authority to do the planning and/or purchasing? No food. No space in the budgets of nearby estates for extra workers either, because all that planning was done last spring before the neighbors went bankrupt? Even if they were let go with references, those servants were shit out of luck if they didn’t get severance pay. Starvation was very much on the table, if you’ll pardon the pun.)
When Ian brought Laritte back to the mansion after she was abducted, he was really relieved at how many of the house staff was alright–it turned out that they’d all helped each other along as they could, the older ones with savings supporting the youngsters, the youngest maid and a commoner knight pairing up to take care of each other, etc. But what happened to the servants that dispersed? The house-staff made it because they stuck together, but we don’t know how the blacksmiths and masons fared.
It was never clear to me how many knights and soldiers died, or in what circumstances.

Can someone explain why they’re holding a funeral? Is it for the people who were killed because Ian was a “traitor”. It was saying something like this in the beginning that the people most near to him and most involved were killed. Is the funeral ceremony for them?
