The Emperor kind of ruined his baby brother’s life (Ian) because he couldn’t stand the insecurity of a LEGITIMATE HEIR (he himself was a bastard son of the former Emperor, which meant that he went THROUGH all his brothers/siblings? to take power). He farmed the kid out to a relative (Duke that was legally Ian’s father) as a bastard, ruining Ian’s adoptive parents’ marriage in the process. It’s unclear if he felt guilty about it later and that’s why he told Ian the truth, or if he wished to make use of the family connection when Ian prematurely inherited the Duchy.
He at least partly OK’d Olivia and Ian’s marriage because Olivia was so very controversial and so very powerless in her own right.
Now that it’s been confirmed that Olivia is foreign royalty and heiress to a truly massive fortune, “pops” is triggered–and when pops is triggered, everybody gets shot. He’s going to use every dirty tactic he knows to undermine Ian, including breaking up his happy marriage. Assassination (character or literal) is very much on the table.
The situation of joint rulership is not a democracy–it’s still an empire. The Roman Empire had a number of ‘co-emperor’ situations–sometimes as a gradual handoff between emperor and heir(s), sometimes because the Empire was just too damn big, sometimes as a compromise between opposing factions.

I wonder if crown princess will fake her hubby’s death to protect him until pops goes down. 🤔 I forgot why pops is bad now, but I think it’s somewhat reasonable if you are on the throne to distrust your own blood. However, princess and ML seem like they could totally run like a democracy where they are both in power.
