I see now why emporer still isn’t great, he recognizes some of his faults, but that’s useless until he actually works them out. I think Leguin is kind of autistic bc he’s trying to understand girls. I guess he hasn’t changed from being a pathetic sad drunk and just wants to keep our golden goose Phil locked up.
So I have an acquaintance whose dad started love-bombing her when her older sister finally got away–in other words, when there was an obvious route *away* (couch-surfing with Big Sis).
When ‘Big Sis’ was getting ready to go to college, a relative had gifted her a used mini-van so she’d have a way to–you know, visit her family and stuff. ‘Dad’ had then decided that “the wheels needed work”…and taken them all off.
‘Big Sis’ left anyway. She never got the van back. She also never visited again (poetic justice, in my opinion). Not too long after she got out of the dorms, ‘Little Sis’ applied for emancipation and got away too. A few years later, ‘Mom’ finally hit the end of her long, long rope and got away. They all three ended up getting restraining orders against him.
Besides his financial support (Mom worked, he didn’t), ‘Dad’s’ family were his emotional punching bags and narcissistic supply.
Fafabb, what the emperor is doing is the behavior of an *abuser* who’s suddenly become aware that he’s in danger of losing some kind of supply. To give him credit, he seems to also be realizing that his keeping Phil in the palace is mostly selfish–but the love-bombing aspect is still present. They’re still in a conditional relationship, even though the conditions have changed.
At this point, Nasar and Jeremia are probably the healthiest ‘familial’ relationships Phil has–Leguin’s some kind of relatively benign psychopath, for lack of a better term (by that I mean he doesn’t seem to take a lot of pleasure from hurting others–he’s just largely incapable of relating to other people at all), and the older brothers don’t get a lot of face time.
@StarkTG Oh, don’t worry, her relationship w/ the emperor will get worse. Especially when the truth comes out. I’ve read a head, & the truth has made me lose ALL sympathy I could have had for him.
I feel a bit bad for the emperor but at the same time I still can’t forget about the “live quietly like a dead rat” part (and apparently neither she) and tbh I feel like he didn’t really do that much to show her that he actually loves her as his daughter.
On the other side, I love how her bio dad is trying his best just to see her happy. He doesn’t know how and may no be the best to but still he’s surely trying for her♡
I’m conflicted. I’m glad that his majesty is realizing how difficult life was for Phil, but I also think that it’s important for him to take those steps to let her know that he does care. People make mistakes and I think that atonement is the road to forgiveness. Also, go Nasar!! You finally told her!!
