The mother is well intentioned, but the way she’s going about it is overbearing since she’s projecting her bad experience with a noble onto her daughter (which she acknowledges in chapter 27). It’s not her fault she met trash and it certainly doesn’t make her hateful, she’s just scared for her daughter and as a result, her way of protecting her daughter is what we see now. Does it give her an excuse to behave the way she does around Bertram and his friend? Obviously not since she could’ve gone about it another way.
